Take Part in the “Our Community” Youth Infographic and Video Challenge!
As one of the fastest growing communities in the region (18.6% population growth rate), Russell Township is welcoming more and more people who bring a wealth of different backgrounds and experiences, and it’s a trend that we can expect to continue.
The Township of Russell is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive community where everyone is welcome and is encouraged to help make our Township a great place to live, grow, and work. In support of this commitment, the Community, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee is inviting youth from across our region to create an original infographic featuring cultural and linguistic demographic data and information about our township. Help us tell the story of the people who make up the richness of our community.
How it works
Youth can register independently or as part of a team. Teams can have a maximum of three participants. Since you will have to consider data analysis, design and storytelling to construct your infographic or video, forming teams with diverse skill sets is recommended.
Using data from reliable sources, such as data from CANSIM (Statistics Canada's key socioeconomic database), Russell Township’s Census Profile and/or Canada’s Open Data Portal, participants create an infographic or video that profiles the rich diversity of our community through the use of demographic data.
What is “demographic data”?
Demographic data is information about groups of people according to certain attributes such as age, sex, language, country of origin and place of residence. It can include socioeconomic factors such as occupation, family status, or income.
What is an “Infographic”?
An infographic uses a 2D static graphic format to transform information and data into a visual story that is easy to understand. Be creative! Your infographic is your opportunity to draw people into a story that helps make data and statistics “real”.
To see some examples of Infographics, check out Statistics Canada’s Infographics catalogue.
Participants can also choose to create a short video (no more than 3 minutes) that uses a combination of video presentation and demographic data to present a compelling story about the richness and diversity of our community.
