Youth Explore the Township of Russell’s Trade Industry
Last Friday, students explored the Township of Russell’s trade industry as part of a “Skilled Trades Discovery Day.”
The Economic Development team welcomed 75 high school students from Embrun and Russell to the 417 Industrial Park in Vars, the Township of Russell’s fast-growing industrial hub.
Students toured a few facilities within the Industrial Park, including Battleshield Industries, Kenworth Ontario, Thermo King and Nordik Windows & Doors. Students were also able to experience hands-on simulations for trade jobs such as welding and operating heavy machinery, thanks to Skills Ontario’s new Trades & Tech Truck.
Skilled trades account for almost 43% of economic activity within the Township of Russell. “Skilled Trades Discovery Day” helped students explore different trade careers available in our community, encouraging local jobs after graduation and helping fill the labour shortage.
This event was organized in partnership between the Township of Russell and Skills Ontario.
“We’re very pleased to work with the Township of Russell to deliver important events like these,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario. “Inspiring youth and setting future skilled trade and technology leaders up for success is crucial. Skilled trades and technologies play an imperative role in our lives and continuing to support and build these fields benefits us all.”
