World Suicide Prevention Day 2024
More
September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. It is an opportunity to focus on reducing stigma about mental health and raising awareness on how suicide can be prevented. Even small actions can make a huge difference.
How to help when someone is struggling:
If you or someone you know are in crisis, contact 911 for immediate help. For other resources, visit the Valoris and Canadian Mental Health Association websites.
‘Creating Hope Through Action’ is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and light in all of us; that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling. Preventing suicide is often possible and you are a key player in its prevention. Through action, you can make a difference to someone in their darkest moments – as a member of society, as a child, as a parent, as a friend, as a colleague or as a neighbour. We can all play a role in supporting those experiencing a suicidal crisis or those bereaved by suicide. ~ International Association for Suicide Prevention
How to help when someone is struggling:
- Check in with them regularly to see how they are doing;
- Listen supportively to what they have to say;
- Remember that you don’t have to have all the answers;
- Know and introduce them to resources in their area, if they need additional support;
- Be prepared to assist them in finding information, but don’t take over as that may reinforce their sense of helplessness.
