Tree Removal Near Embrun Roundabout
Starting the week of December 20th, residents may see some tree removal activity on the small municipal lot of greenspace next to the roundabout in Embrun. This is a former section of the recreation trail.
A contractor will perform the work, which includes removing trees and notching stumps, over the next few weeks.
There have been concerns about the decision to have trees and bushes removed from the lot. Due to its prime location next to commercially zoned lands, this 0.8-acre of municipal property is a gateway entrance to the village of Embrun. It is a greenspace that sets the impression for the entire local business community. Removing trees and notching stumps is the first step in creating a welcoming and beautiful gateway entrance for visitors and investors. This land is being cleaned and landscaped so there can be a more attractive entrance and view of the commercial/business area. In 2022, topsoil and grass seed will be added to the lot.
Initially, the 0.8 acres of municipal greenspace was approved to be completely cleared of all trees. Thanks to input received from the public, guidance from staff, an agreement with a developer, and direction from Council, some of the largest, healthy, and mature trees will remain on the lot. These trees have all been evaluated and recommended to remain on the lot by South Nation Conservation Authority, who have 75 years of tree planting, forestry, and environmental sustainability experience.
This decision has helped the Township find a good balance between competing priorities. Landscaping this property means improving the municipal land, conserving healthy mature trees, and promoting economic development.
A goal of the Township’s 2019-2022 Strategic Plan is to foster healthy and inclusive communities by investigating alternative sites for tree planting. To help support this goal, the family charity of the owner of 1044 St Guillaume will donate $50,000 to the Township over the next five years towards initiatives that support this goal. This personal donation is in addition to the cash-in-lieu of parkland fees paid with the owner’s official commercial Site Plan.
