Township Of Russell Unveils First Historical Plaque In Marionville
The Township of Russell unveiled the first plaque in Marionville as part of its Historical Plaque Program on Wednesday, recognizing the Sainte Thérèse D’Avila Church.
Over 100 years ago, the four Marion brothers, Isaïe, Urgel, Séraphin and Ludger, sought to establish a new community. With the efforts of the Marion brothers, and in collaboration with other members of the community, the Sainte-Thérèse d'Avila Church was built in 1904.The village of Marionville was subsequently named after the Marion family.
The historical plaque is meant to commemorate the establishment of this building,as it represents the first milestone in the development of the village of Marionville. The community has continued to grow rapidly. Today, the village includes a school, a community centre, many new homes, and more.
Speakers at the unveiling included Mayor Pierre Leroux and François Marion, President of the Marionville Citizens Committee. The Township was pleased to have many community members in attendance to celebrate the unveiling.
There are now 13 plaques to visit as part of the Historical Plaque Program. More will be added to the program next year.
This plaque was prepared in partnership with the Marionville Citizens Committee.
Each bronze plaque has a historical photo and bilingual text describing the site’s historical significance. Visitors will find further details about the sites on the Township’s Historical Plaque Program webpage.
