Russell Township Joins the White Ribbon Awareness Campaign
From November 25 to December 10, Russell Township proudly participates in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global initiative to end violence against women and girls. This period includes the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6, which commemorates the tragic 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, where 14 young women lost their lives.
This year, Maison Interlude House has invited municipalities within the United Counties of Prescott and Russell to join the White Ribbon Awareness Campaign. This international movement, the largest of its kind, calls on men and boys to take an active role in promoting gender equality, healthy relationships, and a new vision of masculinity.
Wearing a white ribbon is a visible and meaningful way for men to stand in solidarity against sexism and gender-based violence. At the November 25, 2024, Council Meeting, Russell Township’s male elected officials and staff were proudly wearing the white ribbon to demonstrate their commitment to this cause. This action is part of a larger effort across the region, where other municipalities and community partners have also shown their support.
Violence against women remains a pressing issue, impacting communities everywhere, including our own. Maison Interlude House provides vital support to over 500 women annually in Eastern Ontario, offering shelter, resources, and hope.
By wearing the white ribbon, our leaders are sending a strong message: men must play a critical role in the fight against gender-based violence. From November 25 to December 10, we encourage all residents to reflect on this issue, take part in raising awareness, and commit to actions that foster respect and equality in our community.
Together, we can create a safer, more inclusive future for everyone.
