Embrun, Ontario — The Township of Russell welcomed the MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Stéphane Sarrazin to Town Hall on January 27, 2025, to announce the approval of funding for the Route 300 Intersection Improvements projects. This significant initiative has been approved under the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) funding stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP).
The Ministry of Infrastructure will contribute up to $6,343,750, representing 50% of the projects’ total eligible costs of $12,687,750.
These projects will include the reconstruction of the Route 300 corridor to accommodate future growth and enhance regional infrastructure. Key improvements will include:
- the construction of a roundabout at St-Guillaume Road, in partnership with the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (the “UCPR”);
- the construction of a roundabout at St-Pierre Road; and
- the addition of turning lanes at St-Augustin Road and St-Thomas Road.
“This is exciting news for Russell Township!” mentioned MPP Stéphane Sarrazin. “I am happy to see that the Ontario government is investing in the project to improve the intersection of Route 300. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of this project.”
Enabling Growth for the Township
These infrastructure upgrades are critical to the Township's ability to support future housing developments, specifically in the growing community of Embrun. The improvements will allow the potential construction of over 2,000 housing units, representing a regional investment to maximize growth and accommodate the increasing demand for housing.
“This $6.3 million investment in Route 300 is one of the largest grants our township has ever received, demonstrating the dedication of our council and staff to advocating for the resources needed to support our growing community. This funding, obtained through collaboration with all levels of government, is a vital step in ensuring that our infrastructure meets the needs of our residents and paves the way for a strong, sustainable future for Russell Township,” said Mayor Mike Tarnowski.
The projects are currently in the conception phase, with construction planned to begin in summer 2026.
