Organics Collection and FoodCycler Pilot Program
Russell Township is making significant strides in waste management practices, with recent Council approval of the Organics Collection to kick off in January 2025. The decision, as outlined in the approved report IS-PW-22-2023 dated December 11, 2023, marks a significant step toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community.
In a strategic move, the Township Administration will finalize the collection and processing agreement with Waste Management and GFL in the coming months. This partnership will not only streamline the organic collection process but pushing the project back a year will also contribute to a substantial reduction in user fees, translating to a collective saving of $300,000.
The decision to postpone the start date to 2025 not only brings financial benefits but also allows Waste Management the necessary time to procure the required trucks. Concurrently, GFL will make adjustments to the transfer station to efficiently receive organic materials, ensuring a smooth transition into the new waste management system.
Russell Township is set to make history as the first municipality in Eastern Ontario to implement compost collection. This progressive move aligns with the Township's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
FoodCycler Pilot Program
In addition to the Organics Collection, Russell Township is introducing another groundbreaking initiative—the FoodCycler Pilot Program. This innovative program aims to empower residents with a small kitchen appliance that facilitates in-home composting.
The FoodCycler will be offered to residents through a pilot program featuring 250 units at a reduced cost. This presents an excellent opportunity for environmentally conscious residents who wish to kickstart their composting journey in 2024. Not only does this program contribute to reducing landfill waste, but it also aligns with the Township's broader goals for sustainable waste management.
This initiative seamlessly complements the upcoming 2025 organic collection, providing residents with a convenient and eco-friendly alternative. Those who participate in the FoodCycler Pilot Program will still have access to the organic collection service once it commences in 2025.
Information on how to apply to the FoodCycler Program will be shared with residents as soon as it is available.
A Sustainable Future for Russell Township
With the Organics Collection set to begin in 2025 and the introduction of the FoodCycler Pilot Program, Russell Township is taking steps toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future. These initiatives not only benefit the community's ecological footprint but also reflect the Township's dedication to providing innovative and practical solutions for its residents.
