Next Steps Following the Mayor's Resignation
We wish to inform you of the next steps following the resignation of our Mayor. As a community, it is essential to ensure continuity in governance and effective leadership during this transition period.
Declaration of Vacancy
The official declaration of the Mayor's position as vacant as of April 19th, 2024, will occur at a Special Council Meeting on Monday, April 15th, at 4:00 p.m. This declaration is a necessary procedural step in initiating the process of filling the vacant position.
Council’s Decision on Vacancy
Within 60 days of this declaration, the Council will deliberate on how to fill the vacancy left by the Mayor's resignation. According to the guidelines outlined in the Municipal Act, the Council will consider two options: appointing a new Mayor or holding a by-election. Each option will be carefully weighed to ensure the best course of action for our community.
Interim Leadership
In the interim period, as stipulated by our By-Law 2022-122, Councillor Jamie Laurin will assume the role of Acting Mayor. This appointment ensures continuity in leadership and guarantees uninterrupted governance as we navigate through this transition phase.
We understand the importance of stable leadership and effective governance in maintaining the well-being of our community. Rest assured, the Council is committed to making decisions that prioritize the best interests of the Township of Russell and its residents.
We encourage residents to stay informed and engaged throughout this process by following us on our official social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X) and by subscribing to our email alerts at www.russell.ca/subscribe.
