National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women takes place every year on December 6. This day is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who have lost their lives to it, namely the 14 young women who were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal in 1989.
This day is also a time to act. We encourage residents of Russell Township to educate themselves and their families on gender-based violence, centre the voices of survivors in our actions, and speak up against harmful behaviours.
Ways to honour the victims of this tragedy on December 6:
- Wear a white ribbon. You can make one at home or order one online.
- Observe a moment of silence at 11:00 am.
- Attend a vigil in your community.
The following vigil ceremonies will take place in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell on December 6, 2024, from 12:15-12:45 p.m. to honour the memory of the women we have lost.
- Rockland Commemorative Monument, at Simon Park (1450 Parc Avenue)
- Casselman Commemorative Monument at Senior Park (at the corner of Laval and Lévesque Street)
- Hawkesbury Commemorative Monument, in front of city hall (600 Higginson Street)
Flags will be half-masted on all municipal buildings and locations in the Township of Russell from sunrise to sunset on December 6, 2024, for National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
