Community Update: Managing Tariff Uncertainty in Our Municipality
Thursday, March 13, 2025
Dear Residents,
Like many of you, I have been following the news about tariffs between the United States and Canada. Trade disruptions of this scale have real impacts on our economy, businesses, and community. I want to assure you that since early January, the Township has been preparing—assessing risks, planning contingencies, and making proactive decisions to protect the best interests of our residents.
A key part of our approach has been engaging with MP Francis Drouin, MPP Stéphane Sarrazin, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to help ensure our concerns are heard; advocating for Russell Township’s interests at the provincial and federal levels; staying fully informed on emerging developments; and working alongside municipal partners to push for solutions that support communities like ours.
At the local level, we are reviewing all major projects, contracts, and purchasing decisions to ensure we are making responsible financial choices in this evolving trade environment. This includes assessing supply chains, procurement strategies, and key projects such as the recreation complex and other planned capital and infrastructure investments. By closely monitoring market conditions and adjusting where necessary, we are working to manage costs while keeping projects on track.
I know this situation brings uncertainty, but I want to assure you that Council remains committed to making informed, responsible decisions that protect our community’s long-term interests. The Township will continue to monitor developments, adapt as needed, and keep residents informed.
Thank you for your trust and support.
Mike Tarnowski, MBA
Mayor Russell Township
