Greener Township with More Trees
Russell Township staff have been working diligently to enhance our parks and green spaces through a significant tree planting project. As part of this initiative, trees were planted, and others were carefully relocated to preserve and expand the Township’s greenery.
With the construction of the Recreation Complex underway, seven trees were successfully relocated to Richelieu Park, and three more were moved to the nearby Jonathan Pitre Park. In addition to these relocations, new trees were planted in various areas across the Township.
Last year, we announced our commitment to replace trees affected by the construction work of the storm sewer replacement along Craig Street in Russell. A robust tree replacement plan was established to ensure the preservation and enhancement of the Township’s green spaces.
Highlights of the new plantings include:
- 14 trees at the Richelieu Park ball diamond.
- 12 trees at Embrun Fire Station 11.
- 33 trees near Route 300.
- 17 trees behind the municipal garage at 857 Route 400.
In total, 76 new native trees have been added to our community, strengthening our commitment to maintaining a greener and healthier Township.
The tree replacement plan was made in consultation, and with the support of South Nation Conservation (SNC) and our Environmental and Sustainability Advisory Committee, which is made up of community members and staff liaison. Russell Township is excited to witness the positive effects of this tree replacement program, with the new trees providing numerous benefits such as improved air quality, enhanced biodiversity, and a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
