Get Ready for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
More
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is coming up on September 30th. Commemorating this day to honour Survivors of residential schools and increase understanding of the history and legacy of residential schools is one step in a long journey towards truth-telling and meaningful reconciliation.
Residential schools were created to separate Indigenous children from their families and communities, and to systematically strip away their traditions, cultural practices and languages. Survivors across Canada have long told stories of the abuse and deaths that took place at these institutions.
Show your support for Survivors on September 30th in the following ways.
- Wear an orange t-shirt and support Indigenous-serving organizations.
- Beyond the House and Café Euphie d’Ici are carrying orange t-shirts with proceeds supporting Indigenous Grassroots Circle.
- Giant Tiger is carrying orange t-shirts with proceeds supporting Indspire.
- Learn more about the ongoing legacy of Residential Schools in Ontario.
- Attend the Russell Township Community Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee on September 25, 2024 to learn about how the committee is working to realize the implementation of municipal-level Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
- We also invite you to attend an event called Healing from Indigenous Intergenerational Trauma at the Russell Public Library on November 2, 2024, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. where Donna Hester will share an Indigenous Perspective as a descendant survivor of Residential Schools and its impact. A discussion about this important topic will be encouraged and welcomed! You can register for this event here: https://bookwhen.com/russellbiblio#focus=ev-svlt-20241102140000.
