October 2, 2023 – Mayor Pierre Leroux is thrilled to announce that the Township of Russell has officially joined the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable community. This milestone is a testament to the Township's ongoing efforts to combat racism and all forms of discrimination, in line with the Coalition's 10 Common Commitments.
The Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, under the umbrella of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, welcomes the Township of Russell among a network of over 100 municipalities across Canada. As a member, the Township is also part of the International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities (ICCAR), initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2004.
This membership aligns with the objectives of the Community Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee chaired by Councillor Lisa Deacon. The committee has been instrumental in driving initiatives that align with the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Township, setting a strong foundation for this new partnership with the Coalition.
To further bolster the Township's inclusivity initiatives, a toolkit provided by the Coalition will serve as a valuable resource in developing and implementing an action plan. The toolkit, titled 'The Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities: A Guide for New and Established Members,' is designed to facilitate local partners in supporting the Township's commitments towards inclusion and diversity.
Mayor Leroux is enthusiastic about supporting Councillor Lisa Deacon and the Community Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in this meaningful endeavor, which marks a promising step towards promoting inclusive municipalities and equality for all.
