Canadian Environment Week
More
It’s Canadian Environment Week! This week is an opportunity to celebrate environmental protection and sustainability. It also coincides with World Environment Day on June 5.
The Township of Russell is taking environmental action by:
- Adding organics (compost/green bin) to the Township's waste collection services starting in the Winter of 2024. This has been a popular community request over the past few years. It will be a big step to reducing waste sent to the landfill. Details to come!
- Creating a Green Fleet Policy to reduce our gas emissions. This includes our hybrid vehicles and a Snow Disposal Facility, fully equipped to treat and control the flow of melting snow as well as reducing the kilometers driven by having a more central location.
- Monitoring tree coverage in the community. We are working on a Tree Cutting By-Law to set standards on when trees can be cut down to prevent unnecessary loss of trees.
- Promoting water conservation. Every summer, we encourage residents to reduce their water use.
- Starting a Climate Change Action Plan. We are working towards creating a plan that has meaningful goals that can help us make an impact.
The Township’s Environmental Advisory Committee encourage you to celebrate our natural environment. Consult the Government of Canada Canadian Environment Week 2023 page or visit one of our Public Library branches for some reading suggestions or workshops!
