RE: Budget adoption
Dear Residents,
On Monday, Council approved the 2023 budget with a 4% tax increase, representing an extra $84 for the average household this year. This taxation increase generates approximately $637,000 for the Township of Russell. Of the 4% tax increase, 1% is dedicated to our future Recreational Complex, and another 2.5% is dedicated to increasing investments in our roads system and infrastructure.
Improving roads has been a priority and the most requested topic of concern from residents every year. With the approval of the 2023 budget, I am happy to announce that Council has further reduced the Infrastructure Asset Replacement Deficit (IARD) by another 19.40% this year for a total of 50.7% since 2019; we anticipate this deficit being eliminated by 2026 at our current pace.
With this budget, we improve roads, sidewalks, and pedestrian safety while increasing cultural, recreational and environmental investments. By addressing asset management deficits and continuing our financial plan for the Recreation Complex, Township is being proactive and planning for the long term.
I commend the staff for their professionalism and dedication to our community. I wish to thank Council for being open-minded during budget discussions; we achieved a reasonable and balanced tax increase during challenging economic times while considering the priorities within our community for 2023.
On April 6th, at 7:00 p.m., a live question and answer session will be streamed on our Township Facebook and Youtube pages. I will answer questions regarding the 2023 budget, accompanied by the Township Treasurer. Additional budget information is available on our website on our Budget webpage. You may send in your questions ahead of time to info@russell.ca or by joining us live and interacting with us. I look forward to engaging with you on this fundamental topic.
Regards,
Pierre Leroux
Mayor
