Waste Reduction Week 2023
This year, Waste Reduction Week is October 16 to 22. The Township’s Environmental and Sustainability Advisory Committee would like to share come tips and key facts to help you reduce waste in the community.
Textiles / Clothing |
Canadians on average purchase 70 new articles of clothing a year. It takes 2,600 litres of water to make one just one new t-shirt.
|
Electronic Waste |
On average, consumers keep cell phones for only two years before they trade them in or throw them out. It takes roughly 530 pounds of fossil fuels, 48 pounds of chemicals, and 5 tons of water to manufacture a new computer.
|
Plastics |
A large portion of the plastic produced each year is packaging, used once and thrown away. By 2050, it’s estimated there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, by weight.
|
Food Waste |
One-third of all food produced in the world – approximately 1.3 billion tonnes – is lost or wasted every year. Every day in Canada we waste 470,000 heads of lettuce, 2,400,000 potatoes, and 1,225,000 apples.
|
And lastly, before throwing out an item, see if you can repair it or swap it. One person’s trash truly can be another’s treasure. By using local groups for free swaps or the Township’s Curbside Exchange Days, you can prevent your item from ending up in the expanding landfill.
Remember, every small action counts. Each time you choose to recycle, repair, or participate in our local waste reduction initiatives, you're making a difference. It's not only about preserving our environment but also creating a stronger, more connected community. Let's work together, as residents of Russell Township, to reduce waste, conserve resources, and build a sustainable future for generations to come.
