Russell Township Unveils Comprehensive Tree Replacement Plan Following Construction Work
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Russell, June 21, 2023 - Russell Township is pleased to announce its commitment to replace trees affected by the upcoming construction work scheduled to take place this summer. As part of the necessary relocation of a storm sewer along McDougall Park, some trees will unfortunately need to be removed. However, a robust tree replacement plan has been established to ensure the preservation and enhancement of the township's green spaces.
To determine the best course of action, several options were evaluated, taking into account the impact on the local environment and the community's desire to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the area. After careful consideration, it was decided that a 4:1 replacement ratio would be employed for large trees, while seedlings would be replaced at a 3:1 ratio. Additionally, a like-for-like approach will be maintained, ensuring that the new trees align with the species and characteristics of the ones being removed.
Under this ambitious plan, a total of 60 trees will be planted across various parks and other township properties. This effort not only aims to compensate for the trees lost during the construction work but also seeks to enrich the natural landscape and contribute to the township's overall sustainability goals.
Among the affected areas is Craig St. where three large maples were very carefully evaluated by a certified arborist. Based on the arborist's assessment, it has been determined that two trees will need to be taken down in order to replace the aging drain. Russell Township is committed to ensuring that the same replacement plan, adhering to the 4:1 ratio for large trees, is applied to maintain the area's greenery and visual appeal.
While the decision to take down these two trees is regrettable, it is in fact necessary in order to complete critical public works. However, the tree replacement initiative highlights Russell Township's commitment to preserving its natural environment and promoting sustainable practices. By undertaking this comprehensive plan, the township reaffirms its commitment to maintaining the community's aesthetic beauty while simultaneously mitigating the environmental impact of construction activities.
This plan was made in consultation, and with the support of South Nation Conservation (SNC) and our Environmental and Sustainability Advisory Committee, which is made up of community members and staff liaison. Russell Township is excited to witness the positive effects of this tree replacement program, with the new trees providing numerous benefits such as improved air quality, enhanced biodiversity, and a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
