The Accessibility Advisory Committee reviews municipal progress on accessibility and makes requests or recommendations to Council.

The Committee made the following requests in 2022:

• The Township of Russell is to adopt at least $20,000 per year budget starting in 2022 for accessibility improvements on municipal property. (Request Approved and Completed — Estimated value of proposed project is $20,000).
• The Township should budget for more publicity to promote the Accessibility Improvement Grant Program which is part of the Community Improvement Plan program. (Request Approved and Completed — Estimated value of proposed project is $500).
• Paving at Boyd Park from the Recreation Trail to the pathway coming from Maple Street. (Request Approved and Completed — Estimated value of proposed project is $6,000).

Accessible Customer Service Policy

The Township of Russell has an Accessibility Advisory Committee that provides advice on accessibility matters within the Township.

To ensure that businesses and organizations are complying with the required accessibility standards set by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), all public and private organizations are required to file online accessibility compliance reports.

To request the Township’s latest Accessibility Compliance Report, contact the Accessibility Coordinator.

The Township of Russell is committed to providing information in accessible formats and offering communication supports upon request.

If you need an alternate format or communication support, please contact the Accessibility Coordinator. We will work with you to provide a format that best meets your needs.

Examples of accessible formats and communication supports include:

• Accessible electronic formats such as HTML, Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF
• Large Print documents
• Reading written information aloud

While every effort is made, some materials, such as maps or technical documents, may not be available in all formats due to technological limitations.

The Township of Russell is committed to ensuring that its municipal website and web content meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Level AA, whenever practicable.

We regularly review our website to identify and remove barriers to accessibility. If we are made aware of content that does not meet accessibility standards, we will make reasonable, good‑faith efforts to correct it.

If you use assistive technology and encounter difficulty accessing content on our website, please contact the Accessibility Coordinator, and we will do our best to provide the information in an accessible format.

This statement was formed by the Community, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee. The Township recognizes that many terms may be preferred over others, and that preferred terms can change over time. The Township’s practice will be to honour Indigenous Peoples in our community with the terms they wish to be identified.

Territorial Land Acknowledgment shows recognition of and respect for Indigenous Peoples.

Acknowledging the land is an Indigenous protocol used to express gratitude to those who have cared for, lived on, and maintained relationships with these lands, both historically and presently.

Strengthening relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples is important to municipal governments and their residents across Ontario.

First Nations territories do not typically align to provincial and municipal demarcations and normally overlap each other. This is the case with the Township of Russell, which finds itself located on Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), Algonquin (Anishinabewaki and Omàmìwininìwag), and Mohawk (Kanienʼkehá:ka) traditional and unceded territory.
