Notice of Study Commencement – 417 Rockdale

Detail Design for the Rehabilitation of the Highway 417 Regional Road 33 (Rockdale Road) Underpass (Site 27X-0207/B0), Vars, Ontario

Project Overview

Stantec Consulting Ltd. (Stantec) has been retained by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to complete the Detail Design study for the rehabilitation of the Highway 417 Regional Road 33 (Rockdale Road) underpass in Vars, Ontario.

The Regional Road 33 (Rockdale Road) underpass was constructed in 1972 and carries two lanes (one northbound and one southbound) of traffic on Rockdale Road over Highway 417. Rehabilitation of the underpass is required to extend its service life.

The project will include rehabilitation of the bridge deck, expansion joint replacement, barrier replacements, and repairs to the superstructure and substructure. A new left-turn lane will be constructed at the north ramp terminal to meet level of service requirements for southbound traffic entering onto Highway 417 westbound. Upgraded illumination will be constructed to support the new left turn lane.

Process

The project is classified as Exempt under the MTO’s Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities and Municipal Freeways (2024). Full closure of Rockdale Road is required for approximately six months during construction. Highway 417 on- and off-ramps will remain open during construction. Signed detours will be in place along local roads during the Rockdale Road closure as shown above. Construction is expected to be completed over one construction season, commencing in 2027.
