New York Central Recreational Trail

The New York Central Recreational Trail runs between the villages of Embrun and Russell. The paved trail stretches roughly 10 km between 901 Notre-Dame Street in Embrun and 290 Route 200 in Russell.

The trail is accessible and suitable for walking, running, cycling and rollerblading.

Portable toilets are available at both ends of the trail.

Winter Use

During the winter months, the full length of the trail is groomed by the South Nation Conservation Authority.

Grooming takes place no later than five days after a snowfall of 10 cm or more.

Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail, including snowmobiles, all‑terrain vehicles and side‑by‑side vehicles.

For everyone’s safety:

  • Stay on the paved portion of the trail
  • Stop at all crossings and use pedestrian signals where available
  • Keep right and pass on the left when safe
  • Use a bell, horn or voice when passing others
  • Move to the side of the trail when stopping

Respect the Trail and Other Users

  • Use garbage containers and keep the trail clean
  • Pick up after your dog
  • Keep dogs on a leash at all times (maximum leash length 2.4 metres)
  • Trail use is not permitted between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

  • No gas or electric‑powered vehicles are permitted
    • Electric scooters are only allowed for mobility purposes
  • E‑bikes are permitted only when powered by muscle power
  • No horses allowed
  • No smoking or vaping, including electronic cigarettes

History

The New York Central Recreational Trail follows a former railway corridor that operated from 1898 to 1957. The Township of Russell acquired the corridor in 1979 and converted it into a recreational trail.
