Backyard Hens

Backyard Hens

Chickens, including backyard hens, are currently only permitted in areas zoned Agricultural, or zoned Rural residential (more than 5 acres). Staff have been drafting a new by-law related to backyard hens which would potentially allow them in some other zone subject to some conditions, however, this by-law has not been presented to Council for approval.

Please find below documents relating to Urban Hens:

Comments and questions towards the Draft By-Law on Licencing and Control of Urban Hens can be sent to MinaYoharaja@russell.ca.

Next Steps:

• Staff to receive comments from the public. Comments and questions can be sent to MinaYoharaja@russell.ca;
• Incorporate resident concerns from the public meeting into the Draft By-Law on Licencing and Control of Urban Hens;
• Present the Urban Hen By-law to Council in August 2020.
