Mike Tarnowski and his family have been residents of Russell Township since 1995. Mike is originally from Montreal, QC, and his wife Tracy is from Sudbury, ON. They are grateful that their two children had the opportunity to grow up in a bilingual community with great schools that have led them to excellent post-secondary studies in both English and French. In addition, the access to organized sports, arts, and culture programs, as well as other community-based recreational activities have led to lifelong friendships and instilled a true sense of community for the entire family.
Mike holds a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the School of Management and Economics at the University of Guelph. Since 1997, Mike works for the School of Hospitality and Tourism at Algonquin College as a professor and most recently as Academic Chair. His areas of expertise lie in management, finance, and accounting.

What motivated you to become a Municipal Councillor?
Mike is a strong believer in civic responsibility. Highlights of his past volunteer experiences include being Director of the Athletes' Village for the 2000 Special Olympics in Ottawa, and Director of VIP services for the 2013 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championships in Ottawa. Mike has also served as a board member for Ottawa Tourism and the Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association, Ottawa Region. Closer to home, Mike sat as a member of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee from 2007-2011 and more recently he has been the Vice-Chair and Chair of the Russell Township Public Library Board since 2014. The move to Council was a natural progression from these positions and a desire to contribute more to this great community.

What do you do for fun?

Mike enjoys kayaking, watching hockey, playing cards, and most importantly spending time with family and friends.
