Part-time/On-call Firefighters Recruitment Campaign

The Township of Russell is seeking dedicated individuals to join the Russell Township Fire Services team for Station 11 (Embrun) and Station 12 (Russell) who have a keen interest in serving and protecting our community.

Recruitment Process:

Stage 1: Applications

Application campaign is open from August 15th to October 3rd 2025. All applicants are required to submit their resume accompanied with a cover letter that clearly details the reasons they are interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter.

Stage 2: Information Session (October 15th or 16th, 2025, at 7 p.m.)

Selected candidates will be invited to attend an information session where the Fire Service will provide more information such as basic requirements, importance of training, minimal expectations, statistics and more. We strongly encourage that your spouse /partner be present as this is a family commitment.

Stage 3: Physical Agility Test (To be determined)

Selected candidates will be required to complete the CPAT (Candidate Physical Abilities Testing). The CPAT consists of 8 events (Stair climb, Hose drag, Equipment carry, Ladder raise and extension, Forcible entry, Search, Rescue, Ceiling breach and pull). This will be done by a 3rd party and will take place in Ottawa. Selected candidates will be responsible to provide their own transportation.

Stage 4: Interview Process (To be determined)

Selected candidates will be invited to a paneled interview process. Interview will be offered in English or French. Candidates will be asked to declare their preferred language.

Basic Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License “G’’
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Physical capabilities to perform tasks and duties related to the job.
  • Current CPR Level C
  • Ability to commit to trainings (weekends, statutory holidays)
  • Live or work within 5km from the fire station
  • Must reside in the Township of Russell

Minimum Expectations

  • Availability to answer calls as often as they can.
  • Availability to attend at a minimum, 70% of training sessions.
  • Availability during the daytime, evenings and weekends.
  • Work towards a DZ Driver’s license (for those who don’t have it) within 18 months from hiring.
  • Availability to perform other duties such as equipment maintenance, community events, volunteer events & functions.

Language requirements:

Excellent proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing in either French or English. Proficiency in the second official language is a strong asset.

Compensation:

The salary is fixed between $27.94 and $29.70 and provides firefighters accident and sickness insurance benefits, employee assistance program, and free access to the gym at the sports dome.

Bartender (Part-Time/When required)

Skills, competencies and knowledge:

  • Must be 18+;
  • Current Smart Serve Certification required;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Requires some physical effort such as lifting, pulling, and carrying;
  • Ability to handle large crowds;
  • Ability to operate the cash register, to maintain cash float, and to complete the deposit at the end of the shift;
  • Must be motivated and able to work flexible shifts including weekdays and evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs. Availability for weekday daytime shifts is a significant asset;
  • Flexibility and reliability are key, as scheduling needs may change month-to-month. The employee must be able to work on a casual, on-call basis with variable hours (e.g., some months may have up to 10 hours of work, while others may have none).

Language requirements:

Understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of both French and English.

Compensation:

The salary is $17.61/hour, includes a pension plan and free access to the gym at the Municipal Sports Dome. The Township would be willing to cover the cost of the Smart Serve certification process.

Human Resources Officer (Maternity Leave Replacement – one-year contract)

The Human Resources Officer is a key member of the Administrative Services team within the Township.  Reporting to the Manager of Administrative Services, the Human Resources Officer coordinates the delivery of a wide range of human resources services in support of the overall human resources operations, including overseeing the Township recruitment processes and practices and organizing and facilitating the onboarding of new hires.

The Human Resources Officer participates in the development of HR strategies, process improvements and system initiatives, and assists in the implementation and delivery of HR services. This position is accountable for ensuring transparency and compliance with relevant laws and regulations and organizational policies.

Skills, competencies and knowledge:

  • A University degree in human resources or related to personnel management such as business administration or completion of a professional development program in personnel administration.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a HR field and/or related position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, (tact, diplomacy, judgement) and effective client service skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, consistently taking initiative and demonstrating a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Adaptability to change priorities and requirements, and ability to work well under pressure.

The salary, based on a 35-hour work week, is set between $62,340 and $77,753 per year and includes a pension plan and free access to the gym at the Municipal Sports Dome.

Positions overview and requirements:

Registered Early Childhood Educators under the supervision of the Daycare Manager are responsible for delivering an educational program including activities that are geared toward children's development, their health, their security and their well-being and ensure professional and efficient management of the programming and activities of the service.

Daycare Cook

The Cook, under the supervision of the Daycare Manager, will be responsible for planning and developing balanced menus and snacks, preparing full meals, shopping, storing food and maintenance of the kitchen. The Cook can replace childcare staff on occasion.

Primary Activities:

  • Prepare nutritious and well-balanced daily meals for children, in accordance with planned menus.
  • Make any necessary menu changes or substitutions to accommodate special needs and food allergies (anaphylactic).
  • Make sure that the kitchen and food storage are clean and properly arranged at all times.
  • Assure the safety in the kitchen environment.
  • Plan menus and determine size of food portions.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Secondary school diploma plus vocational training in meal preparation cooking paired with a minimum of one year of experience in a similar position (daycare, hospital, elderly residence).
  • Food Safety Training Attestation (mandatory).
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Up to date First Aid certification (CPR Level C).
  • Up to date immunization record.
  • Valid and Negative Criminal Record Check - Vulnerable Sector (within six months).
  • Job that requires good physical fitness.
  • The incumbent must be organized, creative and able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Language requirements:

Excellent proficiency in French (verbal and written). English is an asset.

Compensation:

The salary is based on a 35-hour workweek and is set between $39,230 and $44,169 per year, and includes an excellent benefits package, a pension plan and free access to the gym at the Municipal Sports Dome.
