Building Department - Summer Student (May to August)

Under the supervision of the Chief Building Official, the incumbent will provide administrative support to the Building Department and perform various clerical tasks. They will be responsible for reviewing construction plans, conducting site inspections, preparing inspection reports and notices of violation, and filing general information.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma with a college or university undergraduate studies in Architectural or Civil Engineering would be an asset;
  • Proficient in software such as Microsoft Office 365;
  • Strong team player with excellent collaborative skills;
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced multitasking environment with limited supervision.

Language requirements:

Strong proficiency in both written and spoken French and English, with a comprehensive understanding and ability to read and write fluently in both.

Compensation:

The salary is $17.61 per hour, and the work schedule is Monday to Friday for a 35-hour workweek. The Township also offers free access to the gym at the Municipal Sports Dome.

Municipal Planner

The Infrastructure and Planning Department of the Township of Russell is currently seeking a motivated individual for the above-mentioned position.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Infrastructure and Planning, the Planner is responsible for processing requests related to zoning amendments, site plans, subdivision plans, and drafting relevant planning and development policies. This role ensures that safety, quality, and efficiency are upheld throughout the planning process and that on-going projects are monitored. Additionally, the Planner is responsible for preparing reports, following up on internal and external communications related to the projects, as well as preparing research projects.

The Planner works with other professional disciplines and municipal authorities to deliver high-quality services to our clients and consultants and will represent the Planning Department at various committees on issues related to planning.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary education in Planning, Geography, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a municipal or private environment in the field of urban planning.
  • Member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI).
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, work well under pressure, and set priorities effectively.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, research, report writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work well in a team environment.
  • Able to maintain confidential information.

Administrative Assistant for Administrative and Communications Services

Under the direction of the Manager of Administrative Services, the Administrative Assistant is responsible for providing comprehensive administrative and technical support to the Administrative Services and Communications team. This role involves a broad range of tasks, from routine office duties to more complex support activities, requiring strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. These qualities are essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the departments and supporting the day-to-day deliverables.

Responsibilities include preparing, editing, proofreading, and translating documents in both French and English, scheduling meetings, maintaining records, and handling inquiries, among other tasks. Additionally, managing communication channels, updating content for social media, maintaining websites and supporting communication initiatives.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary education in Office or Public Administration, Communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a similar role.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency in basic graphic design skills and experience with Adobe Creative Suite (preferred but not required) and other media software platforms.

Public Works Equipment Operators - Two (2) Full-Time Positions

Position overview and requirements:

Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for operating heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, buildings, and other structures.

The Operator will be responsible for performing the following duties but is not limited to:

  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and loaders to excavate materials and to construct and maintain gravel and asphalt roads, parking lots, drainage systems, sidewalk and signage during construction and related activities;
  • Inspect and report on the condition of, traffic and directional signage and bridges, and drainage systems and lighting;
  • Operate heavy equipment to repair, resurface roads during road construction and/or repair;
  • Operate heavy equipment to provide snow removal and ice control on all municipal roads and parking lots;
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment and perform manual tasks related to maintenance and operations of roads and drainage system.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Completion of secondary school education;
  • 3 years of experience in heavy equipment operations including loading, unloading and snow removal experience;
  • Must be able to work different work schedules and/or work irregular shifts (summer and winter) as well be available 24/7 (On-call) during winter snow maintenance and removal period;
  • Must reside within a 30-minute range of the Municipal garage to respond to the minimum required response time during the winter snow maintenance and removal period;
  • Possess a DZ License;
  • Completion of apprenticeship program or industry courses in heavy equipment operating combined with on-the-job training;
  • Certifications in Winter Patrol and/or any equivalent snow driving school, in road construction and/or road management would be an asset;
  • A knowledge of mechanics and welding would be an asset.

Language requirements:

Proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing of both in French and English.

Compensation:

The salary, based on 40 hours a week, is between $60,405 and $75,378 per year includes an excellent benefit package, a pension plan as well as free access to the gym at the Municipal Russell Sports Dome.
